Cape Cod could be a trip itself, rather than a brief stop. This was where Portugal established an early fishing settlement, curiously ignored by the history books. This was where the Mayflower drifted ashore and the Pilgrims recovered from the hurricane before moving on to Plymouth. This was one of the early whaling centers and because of the closeness to the Stellwagon Banks this is still the best place on the Atlantic Coast for whalewatching. |

Provincetown today is a great artists colony with 100 studios and galleries. Cape Cod was where American tourism began, as Bostonians took ferries out for a day, a weekend or a Summer, and began building their own cottages. Today much of Cape Cod is National Park, but nestled among the dunes and beaches are motels, cottages,and restaurants predating the park. Expect heavy traffic. The two lane roads are congested. Make lodging reservations well ahead. |

If you're following our itinerary, you'll get off the Nantucket Ferry at Hyannisport. Follow the signs to Cummaquid or Yarmouthport and you'll cross state route 6. Turn right, and follow 6 all the way to Wellfleet or Provincetown. If you're camping at Nickerson Forest State Park, watch for signs of a left turn. The road to the Truro Hostel turns off to the right above Wellfleet. From the ferry to Provincetown is not a long drive, but the later in the Summer you come, the longer it will take. Gas up in Hyannisport, because you may be in bumper to bumper traffic with no stations. You'll make it to Provincetown in time for dinner, but you may spend the whole afternoon in traffic. |  |
